MassMutual Center, Western New England Golden Gloves Championship Boxing
The Western New England Golden Gloves Championship Tournament, presented by Springfield’s Central City Boxing & Barbell, will feature 300 of today’s rising stars and future world champions in a series of quarterfinal, semifinal and championship bouts.
Preliminary fights: Friday, January 5 & Saturday, January 6; Doors open at 6:00 p.m. and the first fight is at 7:30 p.m.
Quarterfinals: Friday, January 12 & Saturday, January 13; Doors open at 6:00 p.m. and the first fight is at 7:30 p.m.
Semifinals: Friday, January 19 & Saturday, January 20; Doors open at 6:00 p.m. and the first fight is at 7:30 p.m.
Championship finals: Sunday, January 28; Doors open at 12:00 p.m. and fight starts at 1:00 p.m.
The winners will continue to the New England Golden Gloves Championships in Lowell for the right to represent New England at the 2018 National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions in Omaha, Nebraska.
Tickets are on sale now starting at $15 for adults and $10 for children. Packages $35-$50.
Last year, western New England sent nine boxers to the National Tournament of Champions, and four of its team members qualified for the Olympic trials, two of which qualified as alternates. Six members of this team have turned professional competing in nationally televised boxing events.
Western Massachusetts has a long history of both professional and amateur boxing. Many Golden Gloves champions began their careers, or bettered themselves through the Western New England Golden Gloves Tournament. Boxers such as “Iron” Mike Tyson, Marlon “The Magic Man” Starling, Larry Davis, Kevin Rooney, Harold Rice, Patrick Ireland, Dave Bergeron, Wilber Cameron and Bob Stewart, who in 1974 captured the National Golden Gloves 175-pound championship with a win over future professional heavyweight title holder Michael Dokes in Denver, Colorado, had all participated in this event.

The MassMutual Center is located in Springfield’s Downtown section, minutes from hotels, bus and train stations. Patrons should enter the MassMutual Center at the entrance on the corner of Dwight Street and Falcons Way.
Traveling North on I-91, take Exit 6 (Springfield Center), onto East Columbus Avenue. Continue up East Columbus Avenue (about ¼ mile) to Court Street. Take a right onto Court Street and proceed past Symphony Hall, City Hall and Sovereign Bank. The MassMutual Center is located at the corner of Court and Main Street across from Court Square.
Traveling South on I-91, take Exit 7 (Springfield Center Columbus Avenue). Turn left at the light at the end of the ramp. Circle under the highway and go straight through one light. Take a right at the second light onto Main Street. The MassMutual Center is located at 1277 Main Street across from Court Square.
