Social Networking in the 19th Century: Paintings by Erastus Salisbury Field

November 22, 2011–June 3, 2012

The phenomenon of social networking isn’t new, technology has just provided new ways to conduct it. In the 19th century, itinerant folk artists such as Erastus Salisbury Field provided a vehicle for social networking as they plied their trade. This exhibition explores the network of families painted by Field during his career, as well as the Massachusetts artist’s historical paintings. The most famous of these, the massive Historical Monument of the American Republic, was found rolled up in a Field family barn in the early 1940s.
