Springfield Museums Exhibit: Zoo in You

Trillions of microbes make their homes inside our bodies, and the Springfield Museums will introduce you to them! Visitors of all ages can explore the fascinating and complex world that is our microbiome in Zoo in You, a new exhibition on view January 21 through April 30 at the Springfield Science Museum. Visitors are invited to explore this vibrant world of our inner microorganisms through engaging, interactive, and bilingual exhibits and programs.

Smith College Museum of Art Exhibition: Leisure & Luxury in the Age of Nero

February 3–August 17. Featuring works seen for the first time outside Italy, this groundbreaking exhibition centers on the ancient town of Oplontis on the Neapolitan coast, a site that was buried and preserved when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 CE. The exhibition focuses on two adjacent, spectacular Roman archaeological sites—one an enormous luxury villa (“Villa A”) that once sprawled along the coast of the Bay of Naples, the other a nearby commercial-residential complex (“Villa B”), where products from the region were exported.

In ancient Rome, the domestic gods called Lares Familiares took the form of bronze statuettes or painted figures and were worshipped daily in household shrines. The Legend of the Lares, curated by 2015 Mount Holyoke College graduate Taylor Anderson, provides an overview of these enigmatic and versatile gods, and the devotional tools of the Roman home. The gem-like installation features more than a dozen bronze Lares and other gods. On view through May 28

Springfield Museums, Meet Your Samurai Ancestors

Springfield Museums host a unique and imaginative exhibit that brings together original graphic novel art from the popular Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series with colorful Japanese woodblock prints depicting samurai warriors and examples of 19th century armor and swords used by actual samurai. Turtle Power! Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Samurai Heroes draws from Japanese artwork, arms, and armor to provide visitors with a rare glimpse of the real-life inspiration for the popular cartoon and graphic novel series. through – May 14, 2017.

School vacation week kicks off on Saturday, February 18th with the Birds of Prey presentation. Join rehabilitator and wildlife biologist Tom Ricardi. Try your hand at the Junior Ranger activities and some of the crafts being offered. Make a pine cone bird feeder with a Park Ranger using a pine cone, sunflower butter, and birdseed. Make a postcard using rubber stamps depicting animals that make their home on the grounds of the Armory. Junior Rangers of all ages are invited to make their own paper Park Ranger Stetson hat. All activities take place from 10:00am-4:00pm, Wednesday thru Sunday.
