Smith College Museum of Art Exhibition: Leisure & Luxury in the Age of Nero

through–August 17. Featuring works seen for the first time outside Italy, this groundbreaking exhibition centers on the ancient town of Oplontis on the Neapolitan coast, a site that was buried and preserved when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 CE. The exhibition focuses on two adjacent, spectacular Roman archaeological sites—one an enormous luxury villa (“Villa A”) that once sprawled along the coast of the Bay of Naples, the other a nearby commercial-residential complex (“Villa B”), where products from the region were exported.

The special exhibition also features the work of internationally renowned jewelry designer Sidney Mobell, celebrated for crafting common utilitarian items into unique artworks through the use of gold and precious gemstones.

Pothole Pictures Presents Young Frankenstein

On Friday and Saturday March 31 and April 1 Pothole Pictures presents Mel Brooks’s classic comedy Young Frankenstein. Saturday’s screening is part of the Pioneer Valley Jewish Film Festival. The film begins at 7:30 on Friday and 8:00 on Saturday. There will be live music on stage beginning half an hour before that both nights. $4 for kids, $6 for adults.

Springfield College Sports and Social Justice Symposium

March 31 from 1 to 2 p.m. The event features sports and social-justice pioneer and Springfield College graduate Justine Siegal. Siegal made Major League Baseball history in September 2015 when the Oakland A’s hired her to be a guest instructor. In 2011, she became the first woman to throw batting practice to a Major League team when she assisted the Cleveland Indians during spring training. The event is free and open to the public.

The Western New England University School of Law Community Forum

The Western New England School of Law will host a community forum on “Hate Crimes, Extremist Activities, and Bias Incidents” on Friday, March 31, from noon to 3:30 p.m. in the School of Law. This event is open to the public, and local residents, advocates, and all affected constituencies are encouraged to attend. A light, complimentary lunch will be served. This gathering is intended to provide accurate and current information, reduce misinformation in the community, and improve collaboration.
