Springfield Museums Exhibit: Jeweled Objects of Desire

On view through December 31. Visitors of all ages will be dazzled by extraordinary gems, beautiful jewelry and fantastically embellished creations from the collections of the Smithsonian Institution. The special exhibition also features the work of internationally renowned jewelry designer Sidney Mobell, celebrated for crafting common utilitarian items into unique artworks through the use of gold and precious gemstones. Free with museum admission.

Tower Square & Native American Exhibition

In what is said to be the first-of-its-kind “show of force” of Native American art and culture ever in New England, representatives of Art for the Soul Gallery, are announcing the opening of 7th Generation: Contemporary Native American Artists of the 21st Century set to run from October 5 to December 31. Artists from the Mohawk, Pueblo, Ashiihii Salt Clan, Oneida, Choctaw, Shinnecock, Montauk, Abenaki, and Cherokee nations will have their work on display at Art for the Soul Gallery curated by Billy Myers, who himself is from the Mohawk nation.

Connecticut Trolley Museum Pumpkin Patch Ride

Pumpkin Patch is a family fun filled adventure where you ride on a trolley car out to the pumpkin patch and each child can pick out a FREE pumpkin. Additionally, when you return back to the Museum you can decorate the pumpkins, get your face painted, enjoy the outside play area and the entire museum. Connecticut Trolley Museum Rails to the Darkside

Ride the rails into the dark country side to hear the story of the cemetery on the property and what happens when you dig it up. The event will be held on Friday and Saturday nights until October 28th. Hours are 7pm-9:30pm and reservations are not needed, tickets can be purchased on the night you attend. Admission is $18 per person and recommended for ages 16+. Rails to the Darkside last year attracted over 4,000 visitors.

The exhibition will explore such themes as the elevation of the ordinary; notions of an idyllic past; the culture of celebrity; and mass media and the power of visual communication. Norman Rockwell Museum Exhibition: Out of the Darkness

Through Oct 27, 2019. Out of the Darkness: The Art of Frank Miller is the first comprehensive museum exhibition devoted to renowned comic book artist whose award-winning work helped to transform the comic book industry and redefine the look and feel of today’s superhero films. The exhibition will examine Miller’s distinctive style for specific characters, such as Wolverine, Daredevil, Elektra, and an aging, vengeful Batman who battles Superman. The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue with essays by comic book and pop culture historians, as well as Mr. Kowalski.

Old Sturbridge Village, HAUNTED BY HISTORY

October 18-29. Guests gather outside The Center Meeting House where they meet Dr. Lantornia, a mysterious showman who promises them he can conjure spirits from New England's past in his "Phantasmagoria." He leads them into the darkened meeting house, where they participate in a séance, encountering the ghosts of several New England figures who died in the 19th century with unfinished business. The séance goes awry when we find out all is not as it seems and Dr. Lantornia has ulterior motives for his Phantasmagoria. Through October is 2-for-1 Adult admission on weekdays only.

On Saturday, October 28 at 5:30 p.m., the University of Massachusetts Amherst Department of Music and Dance will host this year’s High School and Collegiate Choral Festival, a performance of honors choirs under the auspices of the Massachusetts chapter of the American Choral Directors Association. The concert will take place in the UMass Fine Arts Center Concert Hall, and is free and open to the public.

Norman Rockwell Museum will present an evening of poetry to honor the memory of Berkshire poet and author Michelle Gillett on Saturday, October 28, starting at 5:30 p.m. A gifted writer and friend to the local arts community, Ms. Gillett’s books of poetry and prose continue to bring joy. This evening of readings by family and friends presents the author’s most current work. Gillett was a dedicated friend and member of Norman Rockwell Museum, serving for 15 years as a Trustee. The event is free and open to the public, with a reception to follow.

October 28, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Starting at noon and 1 p.m., enjoy a K-9 officer demonstration, to be held on the Museum grounds. At 1:30 p.m., join Museum staff for a drawing demonstration based on Norman Rockwell’s classic 1958 tribute to law enforcement, The Runaway. Visitors will also have the opportunity to view official police cars, fire trucks, and an ambulance, and take their photo with a special mock-up of the diner from The Runaway.
