GSCVB Unveils 20th Annual Howdy Awards Anniversary Logo
Springfield, MA-- (October 21, 2014)—The Greater Springfield Convention and Visitors Bureau (GSCVB) is proud to unveil a new 20th Anniversary logo for the Howdy Awards for Hospitality Excellence. The awards program was created by the GSCVB in 1995 to recognize front-line employees in the hospitality industry for providing outstanding service to their guests and customers.
With nearly 130,000 people employed in the Massachusetts tourism industry, the revenue generated from the tourism industry is a significant source of income on local, state and national levels. Towns and cities across the country are united in their need to provide sufficient hospitality training to those individuals on the front line who serve visitors, and whose demeanor and capability will often figure in the visitor’s word-of-mouth recommendation about the region, as well as determine whether or not that visitor will plan a repeat trip. With that in mind, the idea behind the Howdy Awards is to reward individuals whose hospitality excellence has generated remarkable goodwill among visitors to their business or organization, their co-workers and supervisors.
“It is a very special year for the Howdy Awards and the Pioneer Valley. We feel as though the hard work of individuals in the hospitality industry throughout Western MA should not go unnoticed,” Mary Kay Wydra, President of the GSCVB stated. “20 years later we are excited to still be celebrating this great initiative and are thrilled to be unveiling a new logo that represents this important milestone and this incredible program.”
Any member of the public may submit someone’s name for nomination for a Howdy Award when they encounter a frontline hospitality employee whose exceptional demeanor and/or work ethic was outstanding. The organization then collects the nominations, which are placed in a number of corresponding categories (ex: beverage, food, accommodations, etc.) and then sends them to the GSCVB to be included within the nomination database. On February 1st 2015, nominations come to a close and a committee will review all ballots and select finalists. Shortly thereafter, a panel of judges (hospitality industry experts from outside the region) will convene and – after reviewing all nominations – select one winner from each category. Categories for the 20th year include; Food – Tableside, Food – Casual, Beverage, Accommodations, Public Service, Retail, Transportation and Attraction. In addition, a Spotlight Award is bestowed upon an individual, group our business who have made a significant contribution to the Pioneer Valley Tourism industry.
Greg Chiecko, Chairman of the Howdy Committee and Director of Sales at Eastern States Exposition stated “I am thrilled to be a part of such a great program here in Western MA. Celebrating 20 years of The Howdy Awards is a true testament to all of the hardworking hospitality professionals in our community. On behalf of the entire Howdy committee, we look forward to celebrating this exciting milestone and yet another successful year ahead.”
