United Methodists Convene In Massachusetts’ Pioneer Valley

Springfield, MA -- (April 11, 2008) – The United Methodist Women selected Springfield, Massachusetts as the site for a meeting of its northeast-based members.  The group is the women’s mission organization for the United Methodist Church.

According to Todd Greenwood, vice president of convention center sales [&] marketing for the Greater Springfield Convention [&] Visitors Bureau (GSCVB), more than 1,000 attendees are participating in the meeting, which runs April 10-13 at the MassMutual Center in downtown Springfield.

The primary purpose of the meeting is to elect eight people to the board of directors for the group’s national organization (which includes nearly 1,000,000 members).  The meeting is held every four years, and previous convention sites include Baltimore, MD and Rochester, NY.

Part of the group’s itinerary includes entertainment provided by Springfield talent including the Drumline from Central High School, dancers from the Rebecca Johnson Visual and Performing Arts School, and the Children’s Chorus of Springfield.

“We are very excited to welcome the United Methodist Women to Greater Springfield,” said Greenwood.  “With just over 1,000 attendees utilizing the MassMutual Center, four hotels, restaurants and attractions, this group will have a tremendous impact on the area.  Special thanks for all of the preparation go to all of the United Methodist Women volunteers and our local hospitality industry partners.”

The national organization of the United Methodist Church began in 1869 by a group of women in the Boston area who were responding to the need for missionaries in the education and medical fields in India.  Since then, the organization has continued to provide support to women, children and youth, both locally and globally.

The GSCVB, an affiliate of the Economic Development Council of Western MA, is a private non-profit destination marketing organization dedicated to promoting Massachusetts’ Pioneer Valley for meetings and conventions, group tours and leisure travel.
